Tutorial Seven: Assistive Technology

Assistive Technology:
Assistive technology (AT) is a generic term that includes assistive, adaptive, and rehabilitative devices for people with disabilities and includes the process used in selecting, locating, and using them. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Assistive_device
Cook and Hussey (2000) define Assistive Technology as 1. the science or study of the practical or industrial arts. 2. applied science. 3. amethod, process etc. for handling a specific technical problem.

#1 Equipment:
Tracker Pro: this device enables people with little or no hand movement to perform all mouse functions by moving their head. The tracker pro is like a web cam which attaches tothe op of a laptop/computer which pics up a signal from the reflective dot which can be worn by the individual on their forehead or on a pair of glasses. To have dwell click an added software needs to be installed such as MagicCursor2000.
The Tracker Pro ost approx. $1000.

How does this piece of equipment enhance functional capacity:
It allows the individual to control things within their own environment to make using a means to communicate assessible.

#2 Equipment:
Talking Photo Album:
  • Combine literacy and ICT with this Talking Photo Album.
Leading on from the popular A5 Talking Photo Album, TTS bring you a bigger A3 sized album with all the same recording features, plus a loud speaker and larger visual area for children to display their stories and work.
  • The Talking Photo Album supports speaking and listening on the new Literacy framework especially focusing on photo sequences, presentations, hiding and revealing pictures and word recognition.

Tutorial Six: Online Communities

www.facebook.com

Focus of this online community:
Facebook is an online community where friends and family can keep in touch with one another via online blogs, comments, playing games agaisnt one another, online chat and through many more applications. Facebook is a free-access social networking website that is operated and privately owned by Facebook, Inc. Users can join networks organized by city, workplace, school, and region to connect and interact with other people. People can also add friends and send them messages, and update their personal profiles to notify friends about themselves.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Facebook

Services provided? How do people contribute? How interactive?
Facebook users may choose to join one or more networks, organized by city, workplace, school, and region. These networks help users connect with members of the same network. Users can also connect with friends, giving them access to their friends' profiles.
The website is free to users and generates revenue from advertising including banner ads. Users can create profiles including photos and lists of personal interests, exchange private or public messages, and join groups of friends. By default, the viewing of detailed profile data is restricted to users from the same network and "reasonable community limitations".
People are able to chose who it is that they allow to be their 'friends' and thereby control who can see their own profile this helps to limit and control the kind of people who you do not want accessing your profile.
It is a very interactive site with many more applicationsbeing added to it all the time by the users themselves, it has online chat where you can chose to talk to your friends that are online at the same time as you. It gives the user immediate connection with their friends.

Why do people contribute to Facebook?
Facebook is a source where we can feel connected to family and friends who may live just down the road or on the other side of the world, not only this but it allows the opportunity to connect with fellow professionals in different parts of the world and can join groups of interess and share thoughts with people you have never meet.

Peter Kollock (1999)

  • Anticipated reciprocity
  • Increased Recognition
  • Sense of Efficacy
  • Sense of Community

Example from my page: hey! haha maybe, still tho! um im not 2 sure yet, almost exams ahhhh freakin bg so may have 2 b next semester im afraid cos wil b in Perth soon 2 :) wen u next up? yes we do need 2 get OTP big tym

Potential Ethical Issues:
When signing up to Facebook, you generally use your own name so therefore you are not anonymous. You are able to send privite messages where only the receiver can see who sent it and what was said. Also you have the option of blocking people from your profile, only allowing friends to see your profile and uploaded pictures which helps to obtain security within your profile and its happenings.

Benefits this Community Holds over Traditional Notions of Community:

  • Can compliment real life communities
  • Can provide large amounts of information
  • Can provide connections over great distances instantly
  • Ability to connect with people of similar interests/needs/ concerns
  • Can foster understanding and unity
  • Can allow silent observation prior to participation
  • Often without monetary cost
  • Individual generally have an equality of voice. A move away from mass media.
  • Speed of information sharing
  • Ability to monitor and regulate users

What this Community Lacks or can not Provide Which Traditional Communities Can:

  • Delusional reliance on virtual communities
  • Rapid growth may result in unwanted or unperceived changes
  • Limited communication tools
  • Validity of the information being shared
  • Digital divide - access

How storyboarding and scripting aided my groups short film:
Storyboarding enabled us as a group to have a visual to base our film on. We were able to create an idea and put it into story form which made it simple for us to use and relate back to. It enabled us to convey the shots, angles and transitions we wanted and with a rough sketch we were able to see how this look and if it would work. Storyboarding is essentially a plan of the end product and it allowed us to have directing when filming.

Scripting (thoughts and ideas of the author are transmitted to the audience) helped us to provide extra detail into our plan, which highlighted key emotions, facial expression and demeanour of the actress and gave cues throughout the filming to her as to how the shot was supposed to be expressed.

2. How is this prevalant in our society? How common place has it become?
We can access technology easily within our society through emails, internet, phones, faxes etc. We are the age in which technology have become very well accessed through people connecting with each on facebook and bebo, we dont have to ring someone we can talk to them through the internet at no cost. These are all things we do which have become everyday things and very common place.

3.Its devices or systems I use:
Internet banking, emails, facebook, computers, digital cameras, cellphones, ipods. The list goes on. I feel I am of an age which we were brought up using these devices so have become very competent using them.

4. How would IT be used in Occupational Therapy practice?
It is used through electric wheelchairs, video conferences, laptops, cellphones, using things such as WII for rehabilitation.

5. Ethical Implications:
Who governs it, who owns it and who has access to it. Monitioring of chat room and content posted onto sites, is this controlled? Many issues around ownership rights.

6. Definition of Computer Ethics:
Computer ethics is a branch of practical philosophy which deals with how computing professionals should make decisions regarding professional and social conduct.

7. Definition of Intellectual Property:
In law, intellectual property (IP) is an umbrella term for various legal entitlements which attach to certain types of information, ideas, or other intangibles in their expressed form. The holder of this legal entitlement is generally entitled to exercise various exclusive rights in relation to the subject matter of the IP. The term intellectual property reflects the idea that this subject matter is the product of the mind or the intellect, and that IP rights may be protected at law in the same way as any other form of property. However, the use of the term and the concepts it is said to embody are the subject of some controversy

8. Definition of Social Justice:
Social justice mostly refers to an ideal of society, where "justice" refers to economic status rather than to the administration of laws. It is based on the idea of a society which gives individuals and groups fair treatment and a just share of the benefits of society, although what is "fair treatment" and a "just share" must remain unclear or subject to interpretation.

9. Definition of Informed Consent:
Informed consent is a legal condition whereby a person can be said to have given consent based upon an appreciation and understanding of the facts and implications of an action.
Retrieved February 14, 2007, from http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Informed_consent

10. How will this help in our practice and daily lives?
IT has huge implications on our lives it is how we connect with others and friends around the world, or even in our own country. It is easy and accessible and very quick to use. In practice we are able to make use of the new age equipment such as WII to help with rebabilitation in the elderly and it makes it easy to interact with other staff members wherever they may be through a simple phone call. We can even talk to practitioners overseas via video links the benefits are endless.
